I recently published a backpacking cookbook. If they carry in my food, I'll cook for them. The flavor will stay the same, but the soup will be creamier. For a creamier and thicker soup, remove a cup of the beans, blend them, and return them to the soup. I cook in the woods too! I've made deals with my hiking buddies. You can combine 2 to 3 tablespoons of broth with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to create a slurry that thickens the soup. We spend a lot of time outdoors camping, hiking and backpacking. Rachael Ray, Horn of the Moon and Moosewood are favorites of mine. Cooking for other people and trying new recipes or foods is FUN! I have a small (but growing quickly!!) cookbook collection and one of my favorite things to do is to read recipes and plan meals. Between the rich stock and salty ham, which kind of self-seasons the dish. Use 9-10 cups of liquid if you like a more 'brothy' soup. Add chicken stock, canned beans, and cubed ham steak, then simmer for just 20 minutes. Drain and pour beans in a slow cooker with 8 cups of stock/water, onions, garlic, and meat or hambone. Sort and inspect for any unwanted debris and discard. Even the dog knows the command get outta my kitchen! LOL. In a colander or sieve, rinse beans thoroughly. ![]() ![]() I tend to take over the kitchen when I get in there. I might make it again, but will add my own improvements if I do. 3 Stars This needed a little *something*something*. I can't think of a single improvement and I will most likely make it again. In the basin of a slow cooker, combine the beans, onion, celery, garlic, carrots, ham hock or ham bone, bay leaves, potatoes, and oregano.
